The idea of creating a Jewish elementary school in East Berlin was born a few years ago, when Lauder Yeshurun was in the process of expanding its projects in Berlin. We discovered that a large number of Jewish families with very diverse backgrounds live in the Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg districts of Berlin. Some of those families have yet to find their way to Jewish educational institutions. Others have given up on providing their children with a Jewish education because all of the existing Jewish kindergartens and elementary schools are so far away . Our primary focus is on these families and we are pleased that our school is becoming a home for them.
The Lauder Beth-Zion Elementary School is a member of a europe-wide school network led by the educational experts of the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation. It is under the patronage of the Berlin Jewish Community and is a state-recognised private school.
The school opened on September 1st 2008 with two classes.
Since the start of the academic year 2010-2011, we now have an additional class in the school, the fourth grade. The number of pupils has increased greatly, and we have now doubled the initial number of students. The children learn in brand new classrooms, renovated in October 2010. There is a pleasant atmosphere, using state-of-the-art educational techniques.
